Carlos Franklin
Carlos Franklin is a multi-media artist of unconventional proportions. His work "Hair That Grows on the Head" uses hair as the raw material for a series of embroidered portraits of men. These portraits are reproductions of photographs of anonymous men, some taken from historical images. They form a series with no apparent link, except their materiality: hair. The idea of this work came from a trip the artist took to Paris, where he visited the neighbourhood of "Chateau d’eau" (10ème). He was there inspired by the hairstyles of the Afro-American beauty salon to create his embroidered hair portraits.
